I can’t pull it out (2019)
I can’t pull it out (2019) was my final installation whilst studying at Ilam. It was the culmination of the last four years of my life, where I had been exploring the intricacies of human relationships and how these interactions could be extrapolated into tactile and malleable forms. This installation included a large found-fabric hanging sewn together to mimic bojagi (traditional Korean textile style) and to replicate the canals within a human heart; these canals were large enough for viewers to walk through to engage with the other elements of the mixed-media installation, such as the multiple video works and a sound piece that resonanted throughout the space.
A snippet of my thoughts during 2019 as I was putting together this work:
I have been looking closely at elements of dance as form of communication and conduit for culture and history. Most notably I have been looking at traditional Korean dance and the effects significant historical events have had on the development of the cultural practice. I have also been looking closely at Oskar Schlemmer's Triadic Ballet. Along with this and my own background in ballet, I became focussed on the idea of movement and costume as forms of restriction. My most recent installation work "I can't pull it out" looked at this as I made costume pieces that only allowed for one type of movement or required a partner. This installation was also accompanied by a sound piece that I had made with the international phonetic alphabet, highlighting the physical of verbal language.
This was influenced by traditional Korean clothing and music.
SELECT judge, UC alumni Cam McCracken, Director of Dunedin Public Art Gallery, chose three artist-recipients whose work will permanently enter the University of Canterbury (UC) Art Collection – Liam Krijgsman, Christian Lamont and Min-Young Her.
